    John Reich designed the Classic Head cents as Assistant Engraver of the Mint. The coins were struck in copper and weigh 10.89 grams using 29 mm planchets. The copper used had better purity than previous issues causing the coins to be softer and wear easier. Thus collector premiums rise for well defined specimens.
