MUST HAVE HOLLYWOOD!
Here's an extremely rare 1959 Academy Awards promotional kit sent out exclusively to movie theater managers by the Motion Picture Association of America. The kit includes a jumbo (11x14 inch) 8 page press book, a full sized window poster (approx. 13x20 inches) promoting the upcoming Academy Awards broadcast/telecast, a small mini window "posterette" (8x10 inches) designed for box office display, and, an amazingly rare Pepsi-Cola contest poster (13.5x21.5 inches).
NONE of these items were ever sent to the public. This is an "Industry" only item. There was no expectation that these kits would need to be used again post 1959 - as this was a one time only event - and so these were NOT saved and are now very RARE!
The 8 Page Press Book has a TON of interesting information contained within it.
It also shows the ad slugs and gives suggestions on how best to promote the Oscars at the theater. It's in fantastic condition. One of the sheets in the book, which constitutes two pages [5 and 6], is printed on a slightly different kind of paper. Perhaps content was changed or the page was replaced - but it's definitely all here as each page is numbered.

The full sized original Window Poster is a spectacular example of early Academy Award Telecast promotion!
Early means early! This 1959 Oscar telecast was only the
SECOND (2nd)
TV broadcast in Academy history. Prior to 1958, the Academy Awards were only heard on radio. TV broadcasting was such a new medium for the Academy that they decided to put the show on with NO commercials! Can you imagine that? Notice that fact is
BOLDLY
advertised on the poster.
NBC TV is also promoted on it, and so this poster serves as a nice early NBC TV item as well. The poster is in Excellent++ to NearMINT Condition! It originally came with one slight fold in the center. I had the poster professionally linen-mounted to preserve it and to make it easier to frame.

The smaller original "Posterette" is a nice early item too.
This would have been used by some theaters at the ticket booth. This particular example was NOT - It's unused! It also was designed to promote the early Oscars telecast to movie going patrons. The promotion worked. It turns out that this telecast was the single most watched program in TV history at the time! It was quite an event. John Wayne and William Holden opened the show, followed by
Kirk Douglas
and Burt Lancaster doing a live song and dance number. Bob hope was in top form as the host, and young actors like Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor were eager nominees in attendance.

The amazingly rare original Pepsi-Cola Academy Awards Contest Poster is the
pièce de résistance
in this lot.
This is a VERY COOL cross-promotional item and unquestionably one of the rarest Pepsi posters known to exist. This colorful poster was made to remind and encourage "Theater Men" to engage in the Academy Awards contest sponsored by Pepsi. The poster has more than fantastic stylized period artwork. It shows the excitement of film making with a director pointing a camera towards what looks to be a young Gregory Peck. Peck was at the height of his career during this promotion. The poster is in remarkable MINT/NearMINT condition. It came folded in half with a slight hairline crease in the center.

LINEN-MOUNTING
is an accepted form of poster preservation by the Library of Congress and every Museum in the country. Except for one or two, every one of the top twenty 0,000.00 and up most expensive selling movie posters were all linen-mounted. A lot of advanced poster buyers request and prefer linen-mounted posters because it makes framing and displaying the posters much easier. The white you see in the photo
(see eBay photo # 11)
is the white of the Japanese paper lining the linen border margin. You can see how easy it would be to damage the original poster without that extra margin of protection. The backing makes the poster much safer to handle -
it GREATLY reduces the risk of damaging the original
. Also, all of my linen-backed posters have been stored FLAT so they DO NOT have a curl to them - They're ready for framing and display!
