Paolo (Marcello Mastroianni) is a Roman cab driver who gives Lina (Sophia Loren) a lift, but she tries to steal his car. Paolo informs Lina's father (Vottorio De Sica), but the complaint goes unheard, as he is the leader of an entire family of thieves. After Paolo's failed attempts to involve the authorities, he decides that the best thing to do is fall in love with Lina. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
