1957. Directed by BERT I. GORDON aka "Mr. BIG". TAGLINES : "You'll be ROCKED Out of Your Seat...SHOCKED Out of Your Skin!" "New thrills! New shocks! New terror!" "The screen's first full-length science-fiction thriller with real live creatures!"- Enterprising journalist Audrey Ames (Peggie Castle) is determined to get the scoop on enormous grasshoppers that were accidentally created at the Illinois State experimental farm, and she endeavors to save Chicago despite a military cover-up. CAST includes Peter Graves, Peggie Castle, Morris Ankrum, Richard Benedict, Thomas Browne Henry, James Seay, Don C Harvey, John Close, Larry J Blake, Eilene Janssen, Hank Patterson, Douglas Evans, Richard Emory, Frank Wilcox.  BEHIND THE SCENES TRIVIA : Patricia Dean, who plays the girl wrapped in a towel, was originally considered for the role of Audrey. She also plays the Red Cross representative in the movie. On the film's poster, she is the girl a two-piece outfit lying on the ground while screaming in terror. Since he couldn't get the grasshoppers to climb vertically up the side of a model building, Bert I. Gordon placed a photo of a building on a table, had the insects walk across it horizontally and tilted the print to look as if they were crawling up. The producers of Batman (1966) did substantially the same thing with their stars, who comically met the many guest stars who did cameos on the show on the way up. The phone in Audrey's car is a precursor to modern cell phones. It worked off of the Mobile Telephone Service, a VHF service with very limited availability. The user would be connected to an operator, who would then route the call to a second operator that could then route the call to the intended recipient.
