1957. TAGLINES : "A deeply moving story of a remarkable family and a wonderful homely old yellow dog!" "Walt Disney's Most Dramatic Motion Picture!" - PLOT SUMMARY : A teenage boy grows to love a stray yellow dog while helping his mother and younger brother run their Texas homestead while their father is away on a cattle drive. First thought to be good-for-nothing mutt, Old Yeller is soon beloved by all. Young Travis Coates is left to take care of the family ranch with his mother and younger brother while his father goes off on a cattle drive in the 1860's. When a yellow mongrel comes for an uninvited stay with the family, Travis reluctantly adopts the dog. After a series of scrapes involving raccoons, snakes, bears, wild hogs and wolves, Travis grows to love and respect Old Yeller, who comes to have a profound effect on the boy's life. VIEWER COMMENT : "Of all the movies I saw as a youngster, in theaters in the 1950s, this is the only one that haunted me and brought tears to my eyes. It made a lasting impression on everyone in our family." BEHIND THE SCENES TRIVIA : The death of Old Yeller is often referred to as the saddest moment in all of the live-action Disney films. Many adults have often described it as the worst moment from their childhoods. Was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, who deemed it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" in 2019. It was the first live action Disney film with no animated sequences to be preserved.
CAST INCLUDES : Dorothy McGuire, Fess Parker, Tommy Kirk, Kevin Corcoran, Jeff York, Chuck Connors, Spike as Old Yeller
