Greetings From Conglomeration Of Miscellany!!
For your consideration, we have two pieces of retro mobile computing technology that are smart. Very Smart: The Sharp ZR-3500X and ZR-5000 models of K-PDAs. These were well designed and constructed, and designed to run for days and weeks on just two AA batteries or a 3V AC power adaptor, utilizing a CR2032 lithium battery as memory backup power. They used the ESR-L Model SC62015 CPU for their main processor, and the Z80 as their co-processor. Both units have 1MB of on-board memory, of which 640Kb was available to the user with rest going to the Synergy operating system and built-in suite of productivity apps which included a word processor, spreadsheet, memos using natural handwriting, and communication programs. They have the capability of sending and receiving data wirelessly using IR transceivers on the back of each unit. They can also sync with a PC using the serial port link cable and computer connection, which is the same for both models. There are some differences to note that make them unique.
ZR-5000
This PDA was designed with connectivity and expandability in mind. Sharp designed a 14.4bps faxmodem for telecom functions that attaches to the computer interface port on the left hand side of the keyboard. It also has a Type II PCMCIA card slot on the right hand side, allowing RAM expansion cards and modems, including some cellular models, to allow it to connect to remote services to retrieve email, connect to a BBS, or send a fax on the go. Being released in the United States in 1996, it was extremely advanced for its time. It could do many of the things a laptop of the time was capable of but with higher portability, and much longer battery life. Aesthetically, it has a faux leather finish on both halves that give it a soft feel when touched. However, it is build very well with high-quality materials designed for longevity. This is evidenced by how heavy and solid it feels. Even the touch screen, which uses a touch stylus, shows no signs of scuffs or scratches. No screen protector was ever needed. Overall, this is the level of quality that should be in consumer electronics today.
ZR-3500X
This PDA is the evolution of the ZR-5000. It uses the same processor, the same resolution touchscreen, and migrates many of the built-in productivity programs to its built-in ROM. Total storage is still 1MB with 640Kb available to the user. This model removed the PCMCIA slot, and replaced it with a built-in 14.4bps faxmodem that can directly accept a standard RJ11 phone cord for telecommunication functions. It also added a much-needed feature, a backlight screen. This allowed the 3500X to be used in low light conditions. There is a small reduction in battery life with constant use of the backlight. It still outlasted the single charge of a laptop of the time period. The physical form factor is slightly smaller and lighter. However, the care in build quality is still ever present, as it has aged as well as its predecessor.
Both of these units are examples of what evolved into smartphones and Chromebooks. They are portable, lightweight, power efficient, and designed with immediate productivity in mind.
