THE BIG CARNIVAL (1951) Billy Wilder, Kirk Douglas Vintage Film Noir 22x28, WOW!Offered here is a vintage original half-sheet (22x28), style A, for Billy Wilder’s searing 1951 noir drama The Big Carnival starring Kirk Douglas and Jan Sterling. Douglas stars as a washed-up reporter who exploits the story of a man trapped in a cave to help revive his career but soon finds he can’t control the media circus that develops. Filmed on location around Gallup, New Mexico the movie used large numbers of locals as extras.
Originally released under the title Ace in the Hole following up on Wilder’s huge success of Sunset Boulevard, the film was a commercial and critical bust, usually attributed to its unrelenting cynicism. Paramount recalled the movie and all the attendant paper and changed the title to The Big Carnival. Nothing was different about the posters or ad campaign save for the title change. The film still flopped, but it’s now considered a classic and a key film in Wilder’s storied career. It’s always seemed to me that the material under The Big Carnival title is somewhat rarer than the original title, but that’s just an observation based on the amount that comes up for auction and sale. Art for the A half-sheet with Douglas choking Sterling with a fur stole is far more effective than the “Kirk in the Hole” art on the B sheet.
The poster is folded as issued, but very clean with no tape or pinholes. Colors are bright. It will display beautifully.
