That program, which began with a series of news bulletins without commercial interruption, caused near panic among listeners who were convinced that an actual Martian invasion was in progress. So the story was well known to the American public when this film was made over a decade later. This popular film version of the story was nominated for three Academy Awards and won the Oscar for Best Special Effects for the near perfect swan-like flying machines attacking earth.
